Good to Know...
How are competitions judged?

Bands are placed into "competition classes" based on the size of wind players or wind and percussion players, depending on the contest. The band’s overall score comes from three areas: Music (40%), Visual/Marching (30%), and General Effect (30%). These scores are combined for an overall score, which is used to rank bands in each competition class and overall competition winner.

There are also scores given for color guard, drum major, and percussion section. These scores are used to rank class, but they do not factor into the band’s overall score.

Good Sportsmanship

Be supportive of the other bands. Recognize that everyone there loves what their kid is doing. We can all appreciate the effort regardless of how the final product may look/sound on competition day.

Know that judging can be highly subjective. Be a gracious winner or loser before, during, and after awards.

Go Crazy Cheering for the BoR!

The band responds positively to audience applause. Encourage them throughout the performance by cheering for them.

The more parents cheer, the more others in the audience will as well. Audiences at marching band competitions are usually very receptive to a band’s performance.

Cheering could also help General Effect scores with judges, so don’t hold back!

Parents

Competitions are busy, crowded events so come early and be prepared:

  • Wear your Show Shirt or other BoR swag
  • Bring layers for later, it gets chilly
  • Cash for tickets, programs and concessions
  • Stadium chairs/cushions
  • Consider purchasing an Air Gram; these are messages to a student or group that will be read when the band takes the field.
Students

They have worked hard to get here, help them remember:

  • Instruments & any accessories
  • Show Shirt
  • Long black socks & marching shoes
  • Spending $$ for concessions
  • Water bottle

Students will ride the same bus to and from the competition. If a parent decides to pick up a student from the contest (after awards), the parent needs to present their student’s bus chaperone with a note and check them out.

Jamboree!
What is Jamboree?

Jamboree is a county wide event where all the marching bands come together and "show off" what they have been working so hard on.

It is also attended by the 8th grade band students in the county so they get to see what marching band is all about.

What to Know

This year the event will be held at North Forsyth HS on Tuesday, October 15th.

We expect them to be performing around 7:00pm. Mr. Johnston will share a full schedule once we get a little closer.
